I couldn’t be with her on her birthday on the 15th, though I had called and wished her. So today became our little birthday celebration. We spoke about books, films, her studies, dreams, and, as always, so many memories (of Satish) that make our conversations special. Time simply flew by.🥹 Before she left, I wanted to give her something she would carry with her every single day. So I surprised her with a new phone. It wasn’t really about the gift. an American artist moved to Japan and ended up winning a manga contest...but would she suggest other artists do the same?? Q: Would you recommend other artists come to Japan and/or enter manga contests? If so, what advice do you have for them? Linnea Kataja: "Whether someone should come and live in Japan is going to vary a lot from person to person. "Some people love it here, while others don't mesh with it and end up returning to their home country because it wasn't what they expected. "If you have the opportunity to live in a foreign country, even for a short time, I would highly recommend it. Living abroad can give you new perspectives on both your own life and the country you grew up in that you wouldn't have had otherwise. "In general, the people I see doing well in Japan tend to be fairly independent and have clear goals for what they want to accomplish here, whether that's building a career or creating a family life they enjoy. "If you're serious about moving to Japan, learning Japanese is essential. If possible, try to become conversational or fluent before moving here, since it will open up many more opportunities and make daily life much smoother overall. "As for entering manga contests, I think they can be a valuable experience simply because of what you can learn from them. These are photographs from the very first portfolio I shot after arriving in Mumbai in 1981. I was 25 years old. A young man from Shimla with a suitcase full of dreams and a heart full of belief. The city was enormous. It could make you feel like a tiny drop in a vast ocean. Every face looked more confident, every street seemed to be moving faster than my dreams. There were days when my premature balding bothered me. I wondered if people would see my hair before they saw my talent. But then I would remind myself of one thing… I knew my craft. The National School of Drama had given me confidence. Life had given me hunger. And hunger, when it is backed by hard work, becomes a powerful force.😍 People often ask me, “Did you know you would make it?” No. I didn’t know. But I knew I would never stop trying. Dreams are strange. They don’t come true because you merely wish for them. They come true because you wake up every morning, work on them relentlessly, survive rejection, silence your fears, and keep showing up. If you truly believe in your dream, your dream slowly begins to believe in you. Looking at these photographs today, I don’t see a struggling actor. I see a young man who refused to negotiate with his dreams.
