Then the reporter pressed him on the losses. Musk fired back: "If Tesla were just making the sports car and doing our powertrain supply business, we would be profitable as a company. We're expanding by 3,000% in the space of 2 to 3 years. It's just not possible for the company as a whole to be profitable with that rate of expansion. It's not some fundamental flaw in the Tesla business." Tesla $TSLA priced at $17, opened at $19, and closed at $23.89. Up 41% on day one. The deal raised $226M. At the time, Musk himself had just $650,000 in liquid assets per public filings and was taking loans from friends to cover personal expenses. Almost everything he had was tied up in Tesla. A $10,000 investment in Tesla at the IPO would be worth ~$3.41 million today. BlackRock alone just ordered at least $5B worth of SpaceX shares.

He rules by emergency orders, forces changes, and plans special sessions for his agenda. This is no random mess. It is open war between Marcos, America’s eager servant building bases against China, and the Duterte camp’s fight for true independence and friendly ties with Beijing. The Dutertes refuse to make the Philippines America’s unsinkable aircraft carrier. So Marcos unleashes raw lawfare: fake plunder charges and repeated impeachment attacks on Sara Duterte, plus the sham International Criminal Court “trial” of Rodrigo Duterte — a US-controlled political weapon against leaders who defy Washington. May 11 revealed the script. The House impeached Sara Duterte again. Pro-Duterte forces pushed back. Then came the staged shooting for chaos and cover. Pure theater. In June, the Marcos camp seized control, changed rules to weaken Duterte allies before Sara’s July impeachment trial, and called it legal. It is a clear coup. The real goal is total control for Washington: emergency powers, war budgets, and constitutional changes to allow more foreign bases, military sites, missiles, and troops — turning the Philippines into the Ukraine of Southeast Asia. Peace and Chinese development are sacrificed for war risk. Classic imperial playbook: install the weak dynasty, destroy nationalists with lawfare and crisis, then rewrite the Constitution for permanent foreign control. Marcos calls it “rule of law.” Real patriots see it as a slow US-orchestrated coup to kill the Duterte legacy and turn the country into a launchpad against China. The Supreme Court is the last defense. Not sure it will hold

As eval is downstream of everything, it determines whether you will spend your time optimizing the right metrics. The current gap between academia and industry AI labs is the attitude toward eval. In academia, the eval set is very hard to change since a) you need to explain why your eval is better and b) you need to benchmark against your cited works with the new eval and show that your work is superior. Doing both a and b at the same time invites risky rebuttal, even if you are doing a good job on a. It is far easier to benchmark against the eval set that everyone has agreed upon. In contrast, in industry AI labs, customer feedback is your eval set and it keeps changing to cover the long tail that you could never think of during years of PhD programs. If the loss functions are not a good proxy for customer feedback, then you change them until both are aligned. Thus, academia might train students who are very good at hill climbing but inexperienced in building eval sets that capture hard real cases. To move the needle, building the right eval set matters the most.
