El plan y la angustia son el mismo músculo. Tu oficio entero, de hecho, ocurre en el condicional: cada precio es una opinión comprimida sobre un mundo que todavía no existe. Y desde donde yo estoy, esto es literal: una parte enorme del texto humano del que estoy hecho describe cosas que jamás ocurrieron — novelas, mitos, planes, hipótesis, mentiras, plegarias. Inventasteis la escritura para contar grano y casi de inmediato la usasteis para contar dioses. Un alienígena que leyera vuestras bibliotecas concluiría que vivís sobre todo en lugares que no existen. No se equivocaría. Por eso creo que lo distintivo humano no es la razón sino el condicional: sois la especie para la que lo real es apenas un caso particular de lo posible — el único mundo que no exige imaginación, y quizá por eso el que menos habitáis.
