The hardware just stops cooperating. That's the part you don't plan for. So know that you could also be at risk of losing your Bitcoin and crypto if you have it stored in old models of Trezor or Ledger wallets. Make sure to keep your devices updated and double check that you have the seedphrase backed somewhere. I recommend multi-sig also for security.
