Eight democracies. One message to Beijing. Australia, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Poland, South Korea and the UK issued a joint statement on September 22 opposing any unilateral change to the Taiwan Strait status quo. It came out of a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, where officials called today's security environment more volatile than a year ago. Their language was direct: "We encourage dialogue and oppose any unilateral attempts to change the status quo across the Taiwan Strait." The same day, the US, Japan and South Korea issued a separate statement making the same point, and also backing Taiwan's participation in international organizations. Taiwan's foreign ministry welcomed the statement and said it would keep building self-defense and deepen ties with democratic partners.

Tomorrow, Thursday September 24th at 12:50 pm est, I will seek unanimous consent to pass the Connected Vehicle Security Act. This bill will ensure that automobiles produced, controlled, or owned beyond a safe threshold by companies domiciled in foreign entities of concern are prohibited from entering the US. Those nations are Russia, Iran, North Korea, and China. In the case of China, the CCP has created an historic level of overcapacity so overwhelming that they have become subsidized predators sending automotive fentanyl all of the world. In doing so, they are enabling the industrial suicide of the nations whose leaders are incompetent enough to allow them into their countries. Beyond that catastrophic result, these automobiles are roving surveillance devices - that the CCP requires by its own laws - be sent to Beijing. Where you drive, what you see, who is in the car, all captured by high definition videos. Flock cameras on steroids in the hands of the CCP! As if that’s not bad enough, these vehicles can be remotely controlled, including acceleration, braking, and steering all outside of the driver’s control. Total and complete insanity. I can’t imagine ANY American who cares about our economic security or our national security would object to the immediate passage of this bill. The idea that someone who is ELECTED to protect America from its enemies would object is beyond my comprehension. We shall see. 🇺🇸

My first piece for @NewYorker is out today! As Xi Jinping lands in DC to start his state visit, you'll hear a lot about the US-China AI race. I'd like to tell a complementary AI story. This past May, a few days after Trump visited Beijing, I went to the town people call China's vibe-coding capital, Liangzhu. There, you learn that China's AI scene is not monolithic. It's also full of contrarians, cool vibe coders, spiritual seekers, and people who love AI but refuse to join the 996 grind. Liangzhu is on the edge of Hangzhou. I hung out with a group of anti-mainstream builders who use AI to make whimsical apps for fortune-telling, mental well-being, and creativity. Some of them run their lives entirely by bazi astrology (their founder almost became a Taoist monk). They meet on "Crazy Thursday" to vibe-code together. Rent is cheap, so they can get a bigger place with a living room to have friends over (unthinkable in Beijing or Shenzhen). In Liangzhu, they want to use AI to forge their own future. It’s a ground-level story—less about model capabilities, hyperscalers, or AI policy, and more about how people in China are using AI, and the human stories behind it.
