It’s hard to describe just how far out in front of us is China 2026. Luckily record numbers are checking out for themselves. Increasingly visa-free travel makes it easier than it’s ever been.
I’ve just been on a “High-speed train” which description fails to do justice. It travels like the wind. If you closed your eyes you wouldn’t know you were moving. China has 50,000 miles of it. It links cities so far better than ours it brings me to tears. Clean. Crime free.
The cops don’t carry guns and their cars don’t have sirens, only flashing lights.
Prices are so cheap I’m scared to tell you. A slap up lunch £2.50. Shirts £12. Deluxe taxis (BMW electric) £4. And this in a Tier 1 City (Beijing Shanghai Guangzhou Shenzen). It’s cheaper elsewhere! The shops are tumbling with goods from the west (at Chinese prices - western goods are of course mainly made in China) from the east often Russia and from a home manufacturing base easily the biggest in the whole world.
Nobody litters or jaywalks, nobody lays in shop doorways, nobody begs. Vertiginous towers of bewildering variety arise everywhere. At night these cities don’t even look real. I have a young wife. When she was born Shenzen was a one-horse town nobody outside had ever heard of. Today it is a Wonder of the World. One of dozens. If you deny it, you’re a fool.

The CEOs building the most powerful technology in human history are asking to be regulated. Demis Hassabis called for AI FINRA. Sam Altman proposed international governance to the G7. Dario Amodei co-signed. The same week, Mira Murati shipped her first model: 975 billion parameters, open-weight.
-- Liquid AI's post-transformer architecture runs on everything from smartphones to F-35s. Deployed on 1M+ devices.
-- The White House is pegging America's open release ceiling to China's best model, giving Beijing control over what the US can ship.
-- Malaysia's PM launching an AI clone of himself to govern in 135 languages.
-- Chinese open-weight models trail the US by 7 months.

This is Moonshot AI/Kimi K3's founder & CEO Yang Zhilin at GTC 2026
The 34-year-old researcher studied at Tsinghua, then earned his Carnegie Mellon Ph.D.
Then he worked with Jason Weston at Meta AI and Quoc Le at Google Brain. His work also connected him to Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCun on the topics of reasoning and representation.
Eventually, Yang returned to China and co-founded Moonshot AI in Beijing a few years later.
His earlier Transformer-XL and XLNet work addressed how language models forget distant context. Moonshot AI carried that research focus forward through Kimi K2’s 1T-parameter mixture-of-experts design.
XLNet, was later cited more than 10,000 times and is still his best-known academic paper.
Kimi K3 expands the formula with native vision, 1M-token context, and only 16 active experts.
His career has become a textbook example of how quickly global research networks can reshape the way countries compete in AI.
