Japanese developers are starting to openly admit that Korean studios are catching up fast, especially in AAA game development.
At G-CON 2025, NieR creator Yoko Taro said that “a lot of Korean developers are ahead of Japan” when it comes to technology. Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya also expressed concerns over Japan being “left behind.”
Games like Crimson Desert are a big reason why people are taking those comments seriously. Korean studios are now making huge AAA games that can compete directly with Japanese and Western titles.
Japanese developers are not reacting with hostility. Kamiya even said, “The more creators we see coming out of Korea who are making one-of-a-kind games, the more it’ll raise the bar for the entire video game scene worldwide.”
