There are a few things that I look back on as my mistakes in the early days. Quake was overly ambitious technically. We could have done all the great multiplayer and modding work inside a Doom++ engine, allowing the designers to work with a more stable base instead of rug-pulling everything out from underneath them a couple times. The follow up game could have then brought in full 6DOF environments and characters. I pushed everyone too hard. I didn’t appreciate how maturing companies need more slack, and that running people at startup intensity constantly will wear them out. Quake was also where I really had to accept my personal limits. I was working pretty much as hard as humanly possible, and I was still slipping past my goal points. On all of the founders’ shoulders, our original corporate stock arrangement and buy/sell agreement was a mistake, and resulted in bad incentives. We wanted to ensure that all ownership rested in the hands of people working hard on current projects, but the Silicon Valley standard approach of vesting stock would have worked out better. One real problem that I don’t accept the blame for is that we were insisting that level designers be not just game designers, but also have strong visual design esthetics. They needed to make things that not only played well, but looked awesome, and it got more challenging as the technology provided a richer palette. Romero covered that well, which set our company expectations early on. We should have figured out how to pair up artists and designers earlier, but there was infighting among the designers, and the ones that could manage the visuals were happy to disparage the ones that couldn’t. Sorry, Sandy.

The Accountability Audit: A Shadow GM’s Case for Contingency The Raiders are currently standing at a crossroads. While the public narrative remains focused on the "Mahomes Model"—sitting Fernando Mendoza to learn behind Kirk Cousins—the internal reality is far more precarious. We are carrying two "broken" chips in our quarterback room: a rookie whose contract negotiations have stalled over signing bonus schedules, and a veteran backup in Aidan O'Connell whom the team is actively shopping as a trade asset. If Kirk Cousins goes down, we aren't just looking at a backup quarterback problem—we are looking at the potential collapse of the 2026 season. The Carr Contingency: Risk Management, Not Nostalgia The argument for bringing back Derek Carr is not about sentimentality; it is about pure functional insurance. The Saints' Incentive: The New Orleans Saints are currently managing a tight salary cap and a new era under Tyler Shough. Holding the rights to a retired Derek Carr is a dead-asset liability for them. They have every financial incentive to trade his rights for a mid-round pick and remove his potential cap hit from their long-term books. The "Shadow GM" Insurance Policy: Neither Mendoza nor O'Connell has demonstrated the consistency required to operate Klint Kubiak’s specific Wide Zone offense during minicamp. We cannot afford a 4-12 death spiral because we were too busy "boosting trade value" for a backup instead of securing a proven veteran who knows how to win. The Path to Accountability: A Two-Step Fix To protect the franchise, the front office must act on two fronts immediately: Secure the Veteran: Contact New Orleans today. The Saints don't want the cap-bloat of a Carr return, and we need a proven leader who can execute the scheme. Offer the mid-round compensation to clear the way for a reunion that stabilizes our floor. Structural Integrity in Mendoza’s Contract: As we finalize Fernando Mendoza’s four-year, $57.27 million deal, we must prioritize the team's long-term health. The contract should be structured to front-load his security while back-loading his major performance incentives. We need his cap hit to remain lean while he undergoes his "graduate school" development in 2026 and 2027, with his primary compensation tied to elite starting performance in his final two years. The Verdict We are one Cousins injury away from a lost year. It is time for the front office to stop managing "assets" and start managing a championship roster. Accountability starts today. Secure the veteran. Protect the rookie. Build for the future
