LEGACY MEDIA TRIED TO SMEAR ELON AGAIN — AND HE SHUT IT DOWN In the Economist interview, the editor went straight to the usual playbook: “People say that you’re a racist.” Elon’s response was simple and factual: “My partner is half Indian, and I have four children with her. One of them was named after a famous Indian physicist. So I would say I’m not racist. And also, if you look at the people that are employed at my companies, we have senior executives of all races. I don’t think there’s any racism there.” Then came the follow-up: “Are you anti-Muslim?” Elon: “If people are coming to a country with antithetical views, I am against that. I’m against rape and murder. I’m against the imposition of rules and laws that are contrary to what we’ve come to accept in the West.” That’s it. No hate. No racism. Just a clear distinction between people and values. Yet legacy media still runs with the same tired narrative because it fits their script. They don’t want the nuance — they want the smear. Elon keeps pointing out the obvious: opposing certain cultural values that clash with Western norms is not the same as hating an entire group of people. The media refuses to acknowledge the difference. The more they push these accusations, the more transparent their bias becomes.

A PhD student built a working nuclear fusion reactor in his garage, let an AI run it, and 400 thousand dollars later he works for Elon Musk. he posted it once. that single post ended with a grant in his account and a job offer from the most powerful man on earth. not a simulation. not a school project. an actual device that fuses atoms, sitting where his car used to be. fusion is the thing governments have been chasing for 70 years with billion dollar labs. the hard part was never the reactor itself. it was the control. the plasma inside has to be held at conditions hotter than the core of the sun, and it shifts and collapses in milliseconds. no human can react fast enough to keep it stable. so he stopped trying to do it himself. he handed the control loop to an AI. the model reads the sensor data hundreds of times a second, predicts how the plasma is about to move, and adjusts the magnetic fields before it ever drifts out of line. it does not wait for the plasma to misbehave. it sees it coming and corrects it before it happens. the same reaction-before-the-event speed no person could ever match. this is the exact kind of build people are tearing apart inside @NeuroClubAi. not to make reactors, but because the workflow is identical for anything hard. let the AI run the loop, predict the problem, fix it before it breaks. same playbook whether it is plasma or a business. then the post went out. within days Elon's fusion team reached out. they did not ask him to interview for an entry role. they handed him a 400 thousand dollar grant and pulled him onto the team building this at scale. one garage build turned a PhD student into an operator for the most ambitious man alive. here is the part that should stop you. he was one guy with a PhD, a garage, and an AI model doing the job that entire teams of physicists used to fail at. the AI was not assisting him. it was the operator. he built the hardware. the machine ran it. and that was enough to get noticed at the very top. most people think AI writes emails and makes pictures. meanwhile someone pointed it at one of the hardest physics problems on earth, held the plasma steady, and got paid by Elon Musk for it. the gap is not between humans and AI anymore. it is between the people who realize what this thing can already do and the people still using it to summarize their inbox.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, poses a question to physicist David Deutsch about what it would actually take to believe an AI is thinking: The setup is a discussion of Einstein and general relativity which Altman calls one of the most beautiful things humanity has ever figured out, maybe even number one. But his point isn't about the physics. It's about the story. As Altman puts it: "Einstein had a story. We knew what he was working on." We knew the problems Einstein wrestled with, the questions he chose to chase, and the path he took to get there. That narrative is part of how we recognise genuine understanding. So @sama builds a hypothetical to test the line between imitation and real reasoning: "If in a few years GPT-8 figured out quantum gravity and could tell you its story of how it did it and the problems it was thinking about and why it decided to work on that, but it still just looked like a language model output but it really did solve it… would that be enough to convince you?" In other words: not just the right answer, but the reasoning, the choices, the why this problem. The same things we'd want from any human physicist. Deutsch's response is short: "I think it would. Yeah." And Altman accepts it as the bar: "I agree to that as the test." The real test for AI might not be whether it can pass as human, but whether it can produce something genuinely new: solving a problem that's eluded us for a century and account for how and why it got there. Output alone isn't enough. The story is what makes it convincing.

In 1990, the World Wide Web was invented on Steve Jobs' computer. Steve ignored it. This is the story I tell in my new book Steve Jobs in Exile. Here is what it should tell the rest of us about the moment we are in now. Steve was running NeXT, an unsuccessful computer company. He had been pushed out of Apple five years earlier and was burning his fortune trying to build a successor to the Macintosh. The machine NeXT sold was a matte-black magnesium cube -- expensive and beautiful and not selling. In October of that year, on the other side of the Atlantic, a British physicist named Tim Berners-Lee took delivery of a NeXT Cube at CERN, the physics laboratory on the Swiss-French border. He used it to invent the World Wide Web. The web ran on the Cube for its first year of existence. The revolution was happening on Steve's hardware, and yet Steve ignored it. Here is the question I keep thinking about from my book. If Steve Jobs, the most visionary tech mind of his generation, missed the Web, the most civilization-shaping tech of his lifetime, how are the rest of us supposed to see anything coming? Berners-Lee had been asking his boss at CERN for a NeXT Cube for months. His boss finally signed off, hoping to test the exotic Cube. "He suggested that I should buy one of these NeXT machines I'd been talking about so enthusiastically," Berners-Lee later told Fresh Air. "And if we needed a sort of test project to run on the NeXT machine ... 'Why not just do this hypertext thing you're talking about?'" The "test project" evolved into the World Wide Web. The problem Berners-Lee was trying to solve was not a glamorous one. CERN employed thousands of scientists from over a hundred countries, most cycling through on short assignments and taking their knowledge with them when they left. Berners-Lee was trying to keep institutional knowledge from walking out the door. He wanted a system that worked the way human memory does, where any piece of information could connect to any other without permission or central control. Through late 1990, he coded in his gray-floored office. The Cube's object-oriented system let him build in months what would have taken a year on anything else. By December, the first website went online. The World Wide Web now existed, running on a single black NeXT Cube in CERN's Building 31. Berners-Lee scrawled a warning on it in red ink: "This machine is a server. DO NOT POWER IT DOWN!!" Underneath the elegant interface he was building HTTP, HTML, and the server software that would deliver web pages. These three inventions would form much of the invisible plumbing of our modern connectivity. When a colleague of Berners-Lee's brought a demo of the Web to NeXT's headquarters in California, he could not get anyone there to pay attention. Nobody even dared show it to Steve, afraid he would dismiss it. NeXT was busy with its own internet plans, which Steve eventually killed. So back to the question. If Steve Jobs missed the web, how are the rest of us supposed to see whatever comes next? The honest answer is that we cannot. Nobody can. The rest of us are not going to outpattern-match Steve Jobs. But here is what I learned writing Steve Jobs in Exile. Transformations almost always begin in obscurity, on the margins, solving boring problems with boring tools. The web did not look revolutionary in 1990. It looked like a tool for sharing physics papers. We are in another such moment now. AI is the obvious changemaker. But the biggest transformations are rarely the obvious ones. The next one is happening somewhere right now, and it is trickier to spot than any sweeping proclamation about AI. We will recognize it, if we recognize it at all, from the unglamorous work few people are focused on. I will not speculate on what Steve would have made of AI today.
