The Department of Homeland Security has prepared evacuation plans for Alligator Alcatraz in case of a natural emergency, but according to Secretary Markwayne Mullin, there's no immediate plan to close the facility despite its issues.
"We do understand there's vulnerabilities there," Mullin said. "It's a soft-sided facility. Right now, we have fires that are within 20 miles of it. We all know that Florida is pretty susceptible to hurricanes, so I could see where, you know, we may run into a place where we may have to, but we have not made any announcement that we're shutting down Alligator Alcatraz."
