19世纪在华外企内的典型对话 那个时候来中国做生意的外国商人“大班”(Taipan)大多不通中文，做生意全靠中国商人“买办”(compradore)。而买办也鲜有认真学过英文的。 双方日常交流用的就是洋泾浜英语(pidgin)，就是用英语词汇，以汉语习惯组合在一起。旁人可能觉得鸡同鸭讲，其实经商效率还是蛮高的。 例如，一家洋行办公室内，大班和买办间的对话像下面这样进行： 大班：“那批杂货怎么会在仓库里放到现在？”(How fashion that chow-chow cargo he just now stop godown inside?) 买办：“那个货眼下走不了，名叫孔泰的人拿到的担保不合适”(Lat cargo he no can walkee jus now. Lat man Kong Tai he no got proper sclew.) 大班：“为什么说担保不合适？我已经把担保文件锁进保险箱了。”(How come you talkie sclew no paper? My have got screw paper safe inside.) 买办：“哎呀，那个担保文件不作数，提供担保的那个人跑到宁波去了。”(Aiyah! Lat sclew paper he no can do. Lat sclew man he have to Ningpo more far.) 解读一下。大班问，为什么那批杂货(chow-chow)还留在仓库(go-down)里。买办回答，这批货还不能发出(walkee)，因为买主孔泰的担保(sclew)有问题。 大班称他已经把保单锁在保险箱内了。买办回答，那份保单一文不值，因为担保人“跑去宁波了”(当时的俗语，意思违约逃遁了)。
