Jensen Huang says every chip startup that bet on cheap inference is dead. For years the AI industry consensus was unanimous. - Inference was easy. - Training was hard. Inference would commoditize. Tiny chips. Cheap tokens. NVIDIA's GPUs would lose the inference market the moment AI shipped. Jensen Huang says the entire prediction was WRONG and illogical. "That was always illogical to me," Huang says. "Because inference is thinking. And I think thinking is hard. Thinking is way harder than reading." The mistake was a category error. "Pre-training is just memorization and generalization. You're reading and reading." That's the easy part. "Versus thinking, reasoning, solving problems, taking new experiences, breaking it down. Decomposing it into solvable pieces." That's not memorization. That's compute-intensive search through possibility space. "How could that possibly be compute-light?" Huang says. "Test time scaling is intensely compute-intensive." The chip startups that built for cheap inference are gone. The ones that bet on AI inference are building the racks for it.
