Captain Cook did not discover Australia. Willem Janszoon landed there in 1606... 164 years before Cook arrived. The Dutch mapped the entire western and northern coastlines and named the continent New Holland. Then they looked at the dry scrubland, concluded there was nothing worth having, and sailed home. The fertile east coast: the harbours, the soil, the continent that would become one of the richest nations on earth, was three thousand kilometres away in a direction they never looked. Cook found it in 1770, and the British stayed. Australia speaks English because the Dutch arrived at the wrong side.
