I am told the Hodge Conjecture is very close to being verified by OpenAI, and that one of OpenAI or Anthropic are also close to solving Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer. The race to be 'next' behind the scenes is unlike anything I've had described to me before If true - and it may not be, given the scale of the rumour mill right now - it could mean 3 Millennium Problems fall in the space of a month. Crazy times

🚨 SCOOP: OpenAI yesterday told employees it intends to release Astra "in a couple [of] weeks" alongside demos of the model performing real-world tasks An updated checkpoint, mostly an improvement to model alignment & reward hacking behaviours, is now being dogfooded (used internally by OpenAI employees via tools like Codex). Anthropic, meanwhile, are sitting on Fable 5.1 until Astra is launched. I think that's the wrong decision, but we'll see

🚨 SCOOP: As previously reported, OpenAI plan to launch GPT-5.6 once back in office next week, with a target window of July 7-9, but want it out as early as possible within that window (so July 7th is the most likely date). This is also perfect timing to catch customers coming from Claude who have just lost their access to Fable 5 in plans, and I'm told the 5.6 plan limits will be significantly more generous. More aggressive safeguards are already being rolled out in preparation for the launch too, although they probably won't be as aggressive as Fable's. DeepMind have also tentatively set a new launch date for Gemini 3.5 Pro of July 17th. Apparently, this extra time has been spent on a new pretrain (they were planning to keep using the ancient 2.5 Pro base, lol), but it remains to be seen whether it's any good. I'm not hopeful. In other news, work is well underway on a new Nano Banana Pro model based on the new 3.5 Pro base, which I expect to be better received and compete well with GPT-Image 1.

🚨 BREAKING: Claude Code v2.1.190 introduces several string changes that hint at preparations for a Fable 5 return, with it being permanently included in subscriptions with weekly usage. The string "You've used your Fable 5 usage for this week" has been added, and "purchased separately from your plan" has been removed

New target is ~mid-July. - DeepMind are not satisfied with the current state of 3.5 Pro and it will no longer launch this month. - Preparations for the launch of Bidi, OpenAI's new voice model, are underway in ChatGPT and we could see it available as soon as this week. - Claude Sonnet 5 is currently available for select enterprise customers under an Early Access Program and is seen as a stop-gap as progress on getting Mythos/Fable 5 back out have stalled. A bit of a disappointing end to the month, but July should prove more fruitful!
