President Xi Jinping met with United Nations Secretary General António Guterres in Shanghai, who is in China for the 2026 World AI Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance. President Xi noted that, over the past 10 years as Secretary General, Mr. Guterres has led the U.N. in firmly defending multilateralism, tackling global challenges like climate change, advancing governance in emerging areas such as AI, and kickstarting U.N. reform. China highly commends his work. China will, as always, deepen cooperation with the U.N. to advance world peace and development and build a community with a shared future for humanity.

Glad to interact with Foreign Ministers and Heads of Delegation of BRICS countries. BRICS has emerged as an important platform for advancing cooperation among emerging economies and giving voice to the aspirations of the Global South. Under India’s Chairmanship this year, we will work together to strengthen multilateralism, promote sustainable development, enhance economic resilience and build a more inclusive world order. @BricsIndia2026

President Xi Jinping met with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez @sanchezcastejon, who is on an official visit to China. The world today is rife with turbulence and faced with a contest between right and might. China and Spain are both countries that value principle and justice. We need to strengthen communication, consolidate mutual trust, and work closely together to reject any backslide into the law of the jungle, uphold true multilateralism, and safeguard global peace and development.

President Xi stressed during the meeting with Chancellor Merz @bundeskanzler that as changes not seen in a century are unfolding at a faster pace, countries should tackle challenges together and pursue a shared future. China and Germany should uphold the central position of the U.N., reaffirm its leading role, and take the lead in safeguarding multilateralism, practicing international rule of law, defending free trade, and advocating for solidarity and coordination. China supports Europe in seeking to increase autonomy and strength, and hopes the European side can work with China toward the same direction, adhere to the positioning of strategic partners, and uphold openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation, so as to deliver greater growth in China-Europe relations, and make bigger contributions to world peace and development.

Is multilateralism over? Many believe it is. World Bank President Ajay Banga says otherwise. Watch the full episode of Leaders with @flacqua
President Xi Jinping pointed out in his meeting with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer @Keir_Starmer that unilateralism, protectionism and power politics are running rampant. The international order is under great strain. International law can be truly effective only when all countries abide by it. Major countries in particular should set an example, otherwise the world will revert to the law of the jungle. Both China and the U.K. support multilateralism and free trade. We should jointly advocate and practice true multilateralism, make the global governance system more just and equitable, and work to build an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization.
