Mark Zuckerberg has said the layoffs of about 8,000 workers at Meta are tied to the company’s huge spending on artificial intelligence.
He explained that Meta’s two biggest costs are AI computers and data centers, plus paying its people, so spending more on one area means less money for the other and the company needs to get a bit smaller.
The job cuts start on May 20 and may continue later this year. They affect about 10% of the workers.
At the same time, Meta raised its planned spending for the year to between 125 billion and 145 billion dollars, with most of this money going to AI data centers, chips and other tech.
Zuckerberg added that AI is already helping inside Meta because one or two people can now build things in a week that used to take dozens of people many months.
Zuckerberg said he does not have a clear view of exactly what the next few years will bring, but he still believes people will stay very important at Meta.
