Infrastructure doesn't just move people and goods—it moves a nation forward. George Washington recognized this in 1785 when he gazed out on the Potomac and saw much more than a river. He saw a means to connect a nation. He knew engineering was only half of the challenge. The rest was bringing people together and forging an agreement that would serve the local community. More than two centuries later, as we build the digital infrastructure of our own era, this lesson still holds.
