This chart is misleading! But it's misleading in a cool way. ChatGPT has seen its market share shrink from total market domination to 46.4% by May 2026. But it hasn't lost. This is a 46.4% share of 2.38 billion AI users worldwide, which equates to 1.1 billion users for ChatGPT. Now compare that to December 2022, when it was just a month old. It has a 98.8% market share, but just 57.7 million users. That's a 41x increase between now and then. This is what makes the story so interesting. It helped grow that market and let other competitors grow alongside them too. And in truth, there's plenty of space to expand still. So that's why this story is interesting. That's the danger of using percentages and it also shows you the limitations of pie charts. A bar chart with absolute user numbers would show that ChatGPT still dominates this market.
