I’ve been briefed on the tragic events that took place this afternoon on the Lower East Side. Based on the preliminary information, NYPD officers responded to an incident on Ludlow Street where a man had suffered a laceration to the head. When officers arrived, they instructed a man with a butcher knife to drop the weapon. He then approached the officers with the knife, and officers discharged their firearms. Both men were taken to a nearby hospital. The man who suffered the laceration is in stable condition, and I am wishing him a full and speedy recovery. The man who officers shot was pronounced dead. As with every incident in which NYPD officers discharge their weapons, there will be an internal investigation, and body-worn camera footage of the incident will be released.

It was a pleasure to join the Family Day celebration at Coffey Park yesterday and spend time with Red Hook West residents over food, music and family fun. I’m thankful to the Red Hook West Resident Association for welcoming me and for their tireless advocacy on behalf of nearly 3,000 residents. Our NYCHA policies must be shaped by the people who call NYCHA home. We’re putting resident voices at the center of our work as we deliver the public housing investments New Yorkers deserve.

What a phenomenal, hard-fought victory for @NYHTC. No one who has spent years welcoming visitors to our city should have to fight this hard for dignity and respect. Congratulations to the hotel workers who stood together and never backed down.

Today, I was back in Floral Park for the Queens India Day Parade — this time as the first Indian American mayor of New York City. It was an experience I will never forget. Mayor David Dinkins once described our city as a gorgeous mosaic. Today, I saw that mosaic in the Hindus and Christians, Muslims and Jains, Buddhists and Sikhs across the Indian diaspora who have helped make our city what it is. To all of them, I say: it is an honor to do that work alongside you. Happy Indian Independence Day!

Long before this city made room for them, Dominicans were here. Today they are the bodegueros who keep the corner open at 3 a.m., the barbers who know every kid on the block by name, the garment workers whose hands built an industry. This week, I was proud to host a celebration in their honor. Our administration is committed to supporting our Dominican communities by delivering a life of dignity — one where they feel celebrated every day. ¡Que viva la comunidad dominicana! Y ¡que viva Nueva York!

Nearly 1,000 New Yorkers joined us for the final FDNY summer block party in the Bronx today. Neighbors came together for good food, music and fun while sharing lifesaving fire safety education. Thank you to every member of the @FDNY for protecting our city, and for building stronger communities along the way.

The NYPD has arrested Larry Montes, a 46-year-old Bronx man, in connection with this attack. He has been charged with two counts of assault as a hate crime, one count of criminal mischief as a hate crime and other charges. I am grateful to Central Synagogue’s security team for swiftly stepping in to prevent more violence, and to the NYPD sergeant who apprehended him and took him into custody. Our administration will always stand against bigotry in all its forms. We will use every tool at our disposal to confront antisemitism and keep Jewish New Yorkers — and all New Yorkers — safe.

Carlos Garcia's life was a testament to community power. From founding Charas/El Bohio to transforming the abandoned P.S. 64, Carlos fought for a Lower East Side that belongs to working people. New York is a better city because Carlos Garcia was here. We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those who carry his work forward.

I am horrified by the assault at Central Synagogue during services today. I can only imagine the pain and fear an attack like this, during Shabbat services, causes for the congregation and for Jewish New Yorkers across our city. Every New Yorker must be able to observe their religion without fear of violence. This despicable act has no place in our city, and our administration will do everything in our power to keep Jewish New Yorkers safe. The alleged perpetrator is in custody and there is no known ongoing threat in or around the synagogue. We are in close contact with the NYPD and will share more information as it becomes available.
