1. Lock each character's identity first with its own reference - full face, expression range, styling. Nothing about who they are should shift once the performance starts
2. Treat the real footage as a performance reference only - the timing, the small movements, the exact rhythm of a reaction. Never the face itself
3. Feed both characters the same performance reference at the same time, so they both mirror the same timing without needing to match each other directly
4. Keep each character's environment locked and consistent the whole way through, so the setting never competes with the expression
5. Match the timing exactly instead of copying the face - a raised eyebrow half a second early breaks the illusion faster than a mismatched outfit ever would
Why this works
- Unscripted reactions have less rhythm to lean on than dance, but the timing trick still works once it's isolated
- Locking identity separately from performance lets two different characters share one emotional beat without looking like copies of each other or the source
- Matching timing instead of the face is what makes it feel real instead of uncanny
