POLYMARKET RAISED ITS SPORTS FEE 67% IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WORLD CUP
The sports taker rate went from 0.03 to 0.05 in July, lifting the max from $0.75 to $1.25 per 100 shares. Sports was the cheapest fee-bearing category on the platform. Now it's mid-table. The sports maker rebate got cut from 25% to 15% in the same move.
Meanwhile the World Cup Winner market crossed $4 billion - the largest market in Polymarket's history - and the semis just ran.
They raised the toll at peak traffic. That's not a scandal. It's a business: Sacra puts Polymarket near $1B annualized revenue as of June, up from exactly $0 in 2025.
Here's the part nobody checks. The headline is not what you pay.
fee = C × feeRate × p × (1 − p)
Your cost as a share of the money you actually stake is feeRate × (1 − q). On sports at a coin flip that's 2.5% of your stake - double the number everyone quotes. At 90 cents it's 0.5%.
Makers still pay zero, and collect a cut of what takers pay.
The free-trading era ended while everyone was watching the football.
