Not a great month for hardware wallets. Trezor disclosed a breach at its shipping provider affecting ~13.7K recent customers. ~11.7K had full name, email, phone and shipping address exposed. Trezor systems/private keys were not compromised. The leak directly links identities and physical addresses to known crypto holders, creating significant phishing, social-engineering and potential physical-security risk. Hardware wallets are often considered "more secure" than software wallets. While I still think that is "generally true" in a few specific aspects, this incident reinforces an advantage of software self-custody wallets (such as Binance Web3 Wallet & Trust Wallet), without purchasing and shipping a physical device that links a user's identity and address to crypto ownership. Not saying hardware wallets are "bad". Just different risk profiles. YZiLabs is an investor in many hardware wallets. Security, privacy and convenience comes in many different shapes. The more we can educate our communities, the better.

One BNB Chain metric that barely gets talked about: BNB Chain has the highest stablecoin market cap bridged into the chain ~$11.1B, according to DefiLlama. For comparison: Polygon: ~$2.37B Arbitrum: ~$1.06B Solana: ~$724M Capital goes where it can actually be used. BNB Chain is quietly becoming one of crypto’s biggest liquidity hubs.

Standing in front of the Burj Khalifa again. Goosebumps. Around three years ago I was here talking to a crypto bro based in the UAE. He told me most of his friends use @TrustWallet. I said that was impossible. It lacked this feature, that chain, that polish. He just smiled and said, “That’s what I see people using.” Coming back to the same place, I can only laugh at my own naivety. Trust Wallet is more performant now. The UX is better. most exchanges ask you to trust them. @binance just publishes the numbers. back in 2022, proof of reserves (the famous P.O.R) launches. here is some data picked for every year: nov 2022: 475,000 bitcoin:native sept 2023: 588,000 bitcoin:native dec 2024: 580,111 bitcoin:native dec 2025: 617,620 bitcoin:native july 2026, latest snapshot: 640,000 bitcoin:native i’ll let you figure out for yourselves what you're seeing. published monthly, publicly, verifiable, for over four years straight. it comes from millions of users choosing, every month, to keep their bitcoin there. four years of receipt, year after year.

It is statistically safer to store coins on exchanges than to self custody. 👇 A few thoughts: Assuming the data is correct, my impression is Willy has always been a strong supporter for self custody. Hack data is easier to collect on the CEX side, usually major news. It is harder on the self-custody side, where hacks, lost coins, etc are often not reported. On the exchange side, some deceased exchanges drag down the data. Binance (and a few other exchanges) have always covered users for any CEX side hacks. Not saying one is better than another. Different approaches have different risk profiles (and product offerings), and may be better suited for different people. A balanced approach is probably best.

Securing the backup seed phrase is hard. Can't have someone else read it and say, "oh, that's a nice seed phrase". Can't have it destroyed by fire, flood, etc. Can't have a hacker gain access to it. And most importantly, can't lose it yourself.

The thing is, with self custody, devs patching the bug won't fix previously generated wallets. And devs have no way to reach users on air-gapped devices. Your wallet stays open to hackers until you act. I'm a believer in self custody, but it puts the burden on you.
