Why did Elon Musk say, “Quantum computing is best done in the permanently shadowed craters on the Moon”? At first, it sounds like one of Elon’s wild sci-fi ideas, but there’s real logic behind it. Quantum computers require extremely cold temperatures and exceptional stability to operate. Permanently shadowed lunar craters, such as Shackleton Crater, remain near −200°C and have no atmosphere, no weather, and virtually no sunlight, making them an extraordinary natural environment for quantum research. On Earth, we spend millions of dollars creating those same conditions artificially. On the Moon, nature has already done it. Once again, Elon isn’t just making a joke, he’s pointing toward the future
