The women who support #LindsayClancy# understand what it feels like to have your own mind turn against you. We’ve fought our way through dark places, clawed our way to the surface, and came out stronger on the other side. To the women who are being ignorant, callous, and heartless: the unresolved trauma and mental health struggles behind some of these reactions are palpable. It takes far more courage to sit there and say, “I’m having dark, terrifying thoughts, I’m scared and I need help,” — which Lindsay reportedly did multiple times, to multiple people — than it does to sit behind a screen and judge someone whose experience you have never remotely lived through. You don’t have to excuse what happened to understand that severe mental illness can distort a person’s thoughts, perception, and behavior. Empathy is not endorsement. Understanding is not forgiveness. And compassion does not erase accountability.
