A robotic assistant can bring food, move a wheelchair and watch over a family. But is that the same as caring?
Practical help could transform life for parents, older adults and people with limited mobility. A machine does not get tired of repeating a task, and it can be present when human support is unavailable.
Care also lives in small emotional choices: noticing fear, understanding silence and knowing when a person wants help or simply wants company.
Robots may handle the workload, but humans should not use efficiency as an excuse to disappear from one another’s lives.
