"The Flock issue is a mirror into what's been happening on the internet for over a decade."- @Lukemulks The same third-party data collection that's been building detailed profiles of us online is now becoming visible in the physical world through systems like Flock Safety. When you combine license plate readers, location data, audio and years of online tracking, you end up with an incredibly detailed surveillance profile. As Luke points out, once that data exists, it can be misused, whether by governments, bad actors, or anyone else who gains access to it. The Fourth Amendment exists to protect against unreasonable government surveillance and overreach, making this more than just a technology issue—it's a civil liberties issue. He also raises another concern that's often overlooked: the security of these systems themselves. If we're worried about foreign adversaries, why are we collecting and storing massive amounts of sensitive location and behavioral data on third-party servers in the first place? If those systems are vulnerable, that data doesn't just become a privacy risk, it can become a national security risk.
