I WATCHED THE MAN WHO COINED "BUILDING A SECOND BRAIN" WALK A ROOM AT GOOGLE THROUGH HIS ENTIRE METHOD. HE LEFT OUT THE ONE STEP THAT ACTUALLY CHANGED MINE. 500,000 readers. 25 languages. A Wall Street Journal bestseller. And not one of them got the step I'm about to add. His name is Tiago Forte. The talk is on Google's own channel. He built the whole system while a chronic pain condition made his own memory unreliable, and it rests on one line he borrows from David Allen: "your mind is for having ideas, not holding them." So you offload. Capture, Organize, Distill, Express - that's CODE. Four folders - Projects, Areas, Resources, Archives. Everything you read, every idea, saved and sorted so your past self is always one search away. Here's what those four steps never include: a step where the notes disagree with you. The method is built to remember and to agree. It hands back exactly what you fed it. That's not a second brain. A vault that only ever agrees with you is a mirror with good search. So I added the missing step. I ran CODE on my own vault through Claude and asked the one question Forte's system skips: where do I contradict myself? It came back with 23 contradictions. A promise to a client in March, the opposite promise in June. A principle I'd written down twice, worded to cancel itself out. My "second brain" had stored both and flagged neither for four months. Forte built a system that never forgets. The harder one is a system that pushes back.
