Gov. Greg Abbott announces a statewide crackdown on birth tourism, saying Texas will investigate, prosecute, and shut down operations tied to the practice:
“I issued an executive order today ordering all state agencies to crack down on any allegation of birth tourism, which is where people come from other countries into our country for the purpose of having a child born here so that child receives United States citizenship. What I ordered is for every state agency to investigate those claims and, where they are found, make sure those operations are shut down. We can even impose what I call the death penalty on a business, which is revoking its certification or license to do business in the state. In addition to that, we are working with the United States Department of Justice. The Department of Justice has ordered U.S. attorneys to be aggressive in prosecuting these cases. We will work with our very aggressive U.S. attorneys in Texas to make sure that any claim or allegation of birth tourism in Texas is fully prosecuted and completely eliminated from the state.”
